Since the American Legion C. Dolph Gehrig Post sponsored the first Peach Festival in 1944, Campbell has held an annual event celebrating the harvest of the local peaches, for which this area is justifiably well-known.
In the 1960's, the event was recognized as an official Missouri function, and is now called the "Missouri Peach Fair."
The fair is well-attended locally, with several things to see and do during the week.
In 1997, Nashville recording artist Kenny Chesney entertained with his country songs at the Community Center on Monday, Aug. 11.
A gospel concert that year featured The Steeles, and The Perry Sisters, on Thursday, Aug. 14.
Numerous pageants are held during the Peach Fair. On Saturday, Aug. 9, Meredith McDowell was selected Miss Missouri Peach Fair 1997. She is the daughter of Eddie and Christy McDowell of Sikeston, Mo.
