This panorama shows Grand Avenue in downtown Campbell on Sunday, July 15, 2001. I was unable to "stitch" the photos together very well, but the scene should be interesting to present and former Campbell residents. From the left, the panorama shows the old building where Doctor McGuire had his office in the 1950s. Beyond that building is the present US Post Office. The Campbell Medical Center is hidden beyond the Post Office. West Grand Avenue continues straight southwest alongside the Jim Morris City Park, with US Hwy 62 bending slightly left (east) toward the railroad track. A Cotton Belt caboose in the city park can be seen where US Hwy 62 leaves Grand Avenue. The next building coming back downtown is Carol's Restaurant. The next building is now used by Union Township road maintenance, but is known to us "oldtimers" as the Missouri Theater building. Ryland Whiteaker, Junior, notes that he recalls the theater as the Lyric Theater, during the time that T.A. Medley operated it. Ryland wonders if the name was changed when "the fellow from Hayti bought it and M.L. Pike became the manager?" The Koffee Kup Kafe was this side of the Missouri Theater, but was torn down around 1995. The new City Hall stands on the former site of Rice Hardware. Behind the City Hall is a Community Healthcare building. A corner of the old Rice Hardware warehouse on West Martin Street can be seen behind the new City Hall, across the street from Bill's Dollar Store (which is where Vancil's IGA was once located). The US flag is flying in the Patricia Banner Park. The mural can be seen on the building across from Rice's ... at one time, that was Ranft's Drug Store. Smith's Clothing, the old City Hall, the 1st Community Bank, and the old telephone office (now a residence) can be seen on the left (northwest) side of Grand Avenue. Coming back on the right side of Grand Avenue (unseen in this photo) is the Dutchess Hut, which descends from Dutch's Restaurant. Boyd's Department Store formerly stood on the next corner (Locust Street). Next is the building where the old US Post Office and Cecil Pitts' Barber Shop used to be. The next small building would be Andy Barrett's Cafe, with the old State Bank of Campbell (now Ms. Henry's Restaurant) on the corner on Ash Street. Lloyd Miller still sells plants and seeds on the near corner where C.D. Bray used to have an office in the 1940s. |
